Cercare Medical’s Journey

Though founded in 2013, the history of Cercare Medical and our technology goes further back.

  1. Massachusetts General Hospital adapts Cercare Perfusion for neuroradiology research.

  2. Cercare Perfusion is implemented at Aarhus University Hospital for a pilot project to support assessment of brain tumors.

  3. FDA clearance achieved for Cercare Perfusion (MRI) – our AI-powered perfusion imaging solution.

  4. Launch on the Sectra Amplifier Store making Cercare Medical solutions accessible as compatible with Sectra PACS.

  5. CE Mark certification achieved for both Cercare Perfusion and Cercare Stroke.

  6. Study on robust estimation of hemo-dynamic parameters in traditional DCE-MRI models.

  7. Partnership established with Siemens Healthineers paving the way for making the Cercare Medical solutions accessible through the syngo.via OpenApps.

  8. Publication on reliable estimation of microvascular flow patterns in patients with disrupted blood-brain barrier using dynamic susceptibility contrast MRI.

  9. Study on biased visualisation of hypoperfused tissue by computed tomography due to short imaging duration: improved classification by image down-sampling and vascular models.

  10. Combat Stroke was renamed to Cercare Medical due to its growing solution portfolio.

  11. Perfusion MRI-derived indices of microvascular shunting and flow control correlate with tumor grade and outcome in patients with cerebral glioma.

  12. Publication on the reliable estimation of capillary transit time distributions using DSC-MRI.

  13. Company established under the previous name Combat Stroke as a spin-out from CFIN by Professor Kim Beuschau Mouridsen and Ph.D., MSc Mikkel Bo Hansen.

  14. Publication on automatic selection of arterial input function using cluster analysis.

  15. Publication on the Bayesian estimation of cerebral perfusion using a physiological model of the microvasculature.

  16. Kim Beuschau Mouridsen joined The Center of Functionally Integrative Neuroscience (CFIN) established at Aarhus University by Professors Leif Østergaard in 2000.

  17. Professor Leif Østergaard (Cercare Scientific Board Member) published the first-ever paper on SVD in imaging which laid the foundation for advanced perfusion imaging.

Our Leadership Team

Kim Beuschau Mouridsen, Founder and CEO
Kim Mouridsen, PhD, MSc is a Professor at Aarhus University. He is head of Neuroimaging Methods at the Center for Functionally Integrative Neuroscience (CFIN) and MINDLab. He has previously worked at the University College of London and held faculty positions at Harvard Medical School/Massachusetts General Hospital and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. He has a track record in developing clinically applicable decision support tools and predictive models and developed the core technology used in Combat Stroke. Kim has published over 40 papers in peer-reviewed journals including Nature Medicine and holds 6 patent applications. He is a lecturer in supervised and unsupervised learning courses at Aarhus University and the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Mikkel Bo Hansen, Founder and CSO
Mikkel Bo Hansen, PhD, MSc is Software Engineer at Aarhus University. He joined the Center for Functionally Integrative Neuroscience in autumn 2011, coming from the field of quantum chemistry/physics. Mikkel is part of the group developing clinically applicable decision support tools and predictive models headed by Kim Mouridsen. He has published more than 15 papers in peer-reviewed international journals and holds 2 patent applications. He is one of the key developers of the Cercare Medical software.
Henrik Andersen, Chief Commercial Officer
Henrik Andersen is our Vice President Of Global Sales & Marketing. With more than 29 years of experience building and managing large international teams and scaling successful products within the medical industry, Henrik is accelerating our effort to keep learning and growing with our trusted partners and clients around the world.
René Thomsen, CTO
René Thomsen is Cercare Medical’s CTO. He is responsible for the technology and overall design of the Cercare Medical software solutions. As a Ph.D. in Computer Science with a commercial background as Founding CEO at his own MedTech company and Director of corporate R&D teams, René knows how to bridge science and practice successfully.

The founders

Cercare Medical is founded by Professor Kim Beuschau Mouridsen and PhD, MSc Mikkel Bo Hansen.

In 2001 Kim Beuschau Mouridsen joined The Center of Functionally Integrative Neuroscience (CFIN) researching advanced perfusion imaging and artificial intelligence together with one of the inventors of advanced perfusion imaging, Professor Leif Østergaard – a current member of the Cercare Scientific Board.

Their discoveries have shown ground breaking opportunities for brain tissue oxygenation analysis, and in 2013 Kim combined his efforts with software engineer Mikkel Bo Hansen to bring the research to life through easy-to-use state-of-the art imaging solutions

– today known as Cercare Medical.

“Ground breaking research, a robust technology, and a market where the current technology failed to deliver what it was supposed to. That’s why we created Cercare Medical.”
